Focus on sustainability: New department at Peiner Träger GmbH

As climate change highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive turnaround in construction, PTG is positioning itself as a supporter of sustainable construction. PTG is taking an innovative approach to increase the use of steel in construction and act as a decarbonisation partner for all parties involved in the construction project process.

"The transformation to a sustainable construction industry is unavoidable" emphasises Dr Jan Schmidt, CEO of PTG. "38 % of global CO₂ emissions come from the construction sector. Our aim is not only to change the industry, but also to make a positive contribution to climate protection. To achieve this, we must assume responsibility and identify solutions that are both environmentally and economically viable."

PTG has established a dedicated department focused on sustainability in the construction industry. The experts in the newly created team are on hand to advise architects, planners, owners and engineers. They provide support in defining and implementing decarbonisation strategies as well as in the preparation, planning and realisation of construction projects.

Marcus Lippe, Head of Technical Customer Services, explains: "We provide support based on many years of expertise in the objective comparison of building structures using different material concepts. We want to support sustainable construction and raise awareness of steel as one of the most sustainable building materials. Steel is unlimited and 100 % recyclable. Another advantage is the low-emission production of steel compared to other building materials. Circularity is already part of everyday practice at Peiner Träger GmbH - we use 100 % steel scrap for our steel production and thus ensure the conservation of natural resources."

Anna Frühling is consulting engineer at PTG and is responsible for sustainability in the Technical Customer Services team. She is aware of the social and political discussion on the transformation of the construction industry, but still sees a great need for clarification when it comes to practical implementation: "Everyone is talking about the transformation of the construction industry and the willingness to build sustainably is increasing. However, we are increasingly hearing comments from the construction industry that there is a lack of concrete procedures for the construction and certification of sustainable buildings. We want to close this gap with our expertise."
